The Kenya Road Board (KRB) announced an update on the construction of the Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct. The institution says that the project is now 50 percent completed and is expected to be fully completed by May 30, 2027.
Motorists have been experiencing traffic build-up around the section, and once the project is completed, it will enhance connectivity, improve mobility and ease traffic flow, reducing traffic pile-ups.
Earlier, President William Ruto set the completion date for this KURA project for December, a statement that differs significantly from the current date announced by KRB. KURA later revealed that the project was slowed down because of some construction limitations.
The Authority further continued by saying that the project has taken longer than planned due to the complexity of the structural works required for the flyover. The installation of columns and steel components is complex and requires precision engineering and phased execution.
Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) continues to work and hopes to complete the project within the shortest timeline possible and open the road to traffic. The institution further urged motorists to be patient until the project is completed.
The KSh 3 billion viaduct project began in September 2020 but was delayed for several years because of payment disputes with the contractors. Construction is now ongoing, with work having resumed in July 2025.
The Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct will be a dual carriageway, approximately one kilometer long, and will include pedestrian lanes and cycling lanes. The project is part of broader infrastructure works and includes other projects like the Valley Road-Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange and the Upper Hill-Haile Selassie Overpass projects.
