Formula 1 could be returning back to Africa since the last Race which was carried on in March 14, 1993 at Kyalami Circuit in South Africa. Rwanda is reported to secure an agreement to host the 2030 Grand Prix near its capital Kigali and if confirmed it would mark a major milestone for Africa Motorsports ending a decade long absence from sports Callender.
Acording to reports by RacingNews365 published on October 6, 2026, multiple F1 paddock sources indicate that Rwanda has been selected to host this event and official announcement expected to be made later this year. The proposed event would take place at a new permanent developed racing circuit, located near Bugesera International Airport which is approximately 40 kilometers from Kigali.
Rwanda’s efforts to bring F1 to the country gained momentum in recent years with the Country’s president Paul Kagame actively engaged to grab the opportunity . Within 2024 the president hosted the FIA General Assemblies and Price Giving ceremony in Kigali and his appearance at formula 1 events kept the country’s ambition in the spotlight.
If confirmed that Rwanda will be included in the 2030 Formula 1 Grand Prix Callender, it will end a long absence of the event in the continent since the last event; the 1993 South Africa Grand Prix held in Kyalami Circuit.
Meanwhile, South Africa hasn’t dropped its ambitions to bring Formula 1 back. The country’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie welcomed Rwanda’s reported progress acknowledging it’s efforts but he maintained that South Africa could secure a race before 2030, Kyalami again expected to be considered the hosting venue if it’s developed to meet FIAs Grade 1 circuit requirements.
Rwanda’s consideration to host Africas Formula 1 comeback is still unconfirmed officially but we are awaiting more from FIA and Rwanda’s government.
