Spiro electric mobility company in Africa partners with Yadea, a China-based manufacturer of electric bicycles, motorcycles and scooters. The two companies signed a strategic partnership agreement aiming at accelerating electric mobility adoption across Africa.
In the partnership, Yadea will supply electric two-wheelers, either bicycles, motorcycles, scooters and related EV products, while Spiro will integrate the supplied two-wheelers into its battery-swapping networks. The companies will also cooperate in customization of the two-wheeled vehicles to make them suitable for local usage.
According to the companies, the partnership deepens the China-Africa connection and will see them coming together, combining their experience of scale manufacturing, battery-swapping networks and Africa’s market knowledge to accelerate the continent’s transition to affordable electric transport.
Yadea’s position in the worldwide market
Yadea is among the world’s leading manufacturers of electric two-wheelers, having more than 100 million sales of their e-mobility products across 100 countries. They have about 10 production facilities globally, over 40,000 stores, and the company consistently invests in new electric vehicle solutions and holds the legally protected rights to over 2,000 inventions.
Spiro’s growth and expansion across Africa
For example, here in Kenya, Spiro isn’t a new name, especially in the Boda Boda sector. The company is one of Africa’s largest electric mobility companies, with its network spanning across several countries.
According to the company, it has more than 130,000 electric motorcycles distributed across about seven countries in Africa, Kenya included, and more than 2,500 battery-swapping stations, and lastly, more than 50 million battery swaps done to date.
The partnership comes weeks after Spiro received more than $270 million funding round, which included investment from NewTrail Capital, a Chinese fund, to accelerate its next phase of growth and expansion across Africa.
As of now in Kenya, getting yourself an e-bike or related product is much more expensive, but one of the partnership goals is to lower the price of e-bikes, scooters or motorcycles, to go a little bit lower compared to current prices.
